Search for a place
Tap 01 STARTING FROM or 02 GOING TO and start typing. Results appear after a letter or two and narrow as you type, so “denv” is already enough for Denver.
Search finds towns and cities, addresses and streets, postcodes, neighbourhoods and regions. It does not find businesses or landmarks by name; search for the town or the street instead.
Each result has two lines: the place, and where it is.
What differs by device
Search opens in a full-height sheet, “Choose a start” or “Choose a destination”. Before you type, it shows your eight most recent places. Destination results also show a straight-line distance from your start, such as about 288 MI, to help you pick the right one — the road distance comes later, with the forecast.
Search opens in a sheet over the window, with your eight most recent places before you type. Destination results show a straight-line distance from your start.
Search opens full screen. With the field empty it shows Use my location first, then your five most recent places. Results show the place and its region.
Type in the field itself; the placeholder reads “Search a place”. The web planner does not keep recent places.
Start from where you are
Instead of searching, you can fill the start with your current position. This is the only time the app uses your location, and it is optional.
- iPhone, iPad and Mac: tap Use my location, the crosshair at the end of the 01 STARTING FROM row. The row then reads “Current location”.
- Android: open the search and choose Use my location, the first row. On Android it can fill either end.
- Web: choose USE MY LOCATION in the starting field.
If location is off, Plan without your location shows how to plan without it or turn it on.
Swap the start and destination
For the drive home, swap the two ends rather than searching again.
- iPhone, iPad and Mac: in Plan a drive (from the Drives tab), tap the arrows button, Swap start and destination.
- Android: tap the arrows on the 03 LEAVING row.
Change the places of a planned drive
A planned drive keeps its places. To go somewhere else, plan a new drive:
- iPhone, iPad, Mac and the web: open the drive, then its menu (•••), and choose Copy into a new plan. The form fills in with the same places and departure, ready to change.
- Android: open the drive’s actions and choose Copy into a new plan. The plan opens with the same places, ready for a new time.
If no route is found
The forecast follows the road between the two places. If there is no road between them — across open water, for example — the app cannot plan the drive, and says so. Choose places connected by road.
Destinations on the way on Android
After choosing where the drive ends, Add a destination adds a place to reach on the way, up to five. The drive visits these places in the order added. Open one to choose its arrival time and stay. In an open drive, All stops and Change in Stops let you change these intermediate destinations; the start and end remain the drive’s original places.
