What it measures
The temperature as it will feel on your skin at this section: the air temperature, with the wind and the humidity worked into it. It is shown in whole degrees, such as 28°F or −2°C, beside the section’s own air temperature.
Why it matters on the road
For the road itself, this is a question about the freezing point. At or below it, with rain or snow falling, water freezes where it lands. At or below it and dry, it is still worth knowing: bridges and shaded bends freeze before the open road does.
It also matters the moment you stop — for a flat tyre, a fuel stop or a closed road. Wind chill describes how cold you will feel; on its own it does not say whether the road will freeze, which depends on the surface and its moisture.
How it is marked
A reading that crosses a threshold carries a small mark in the section’s CONDITIONS. The marks differ slightly between devices:
Bridges and shaded bends freeze first.
At or below 0°C · 32°F, nothing falling
Ice forming on the road. iPhone, iPad and Mac only.
At or below 0°C · 32°F, something falling
On Android the reading is marked MILD at or below freezing, whether or not anything is falling.
A mark describes this reading alone. It does not change the section’s rating, which comes from the kind of weather forecast — see Severity.
