Android timeline drawn to time
Android phones and tablets use an hour grid for each local day, for every drive. Weather sections and stops occupy the time they take; the overview uses elapsed time too. Stops are square ink blocks, separate from the weather ratings. The light strip beside the grid opens light details, and changes of clock appear in the time gutter. Arrival in local time uses the destination’s clock.
Blocks longer than three hours fold to their beginning and end. Open a fold to read the whole block; a night crossing midnight continues on the next day. Text size also increases the grid’s height. Tap a weather block or stop for its details, and use the section navigator to move between weather, light, clock changes and stops.
Choose Edit to add, move or stretch stops. Add a stop offers hour and minute fields, and each stop has TalkBack and keyboard actions. Undo in the snackbar or edit toolbar restores a change. Done leaves editing. New forecasts follow the edited plan; Long and overnight drives explains the controls, destinations and pace choices.
Trip details separates Driving, Stopped and Arrive, with night and stop counts. Low-light driving counts road time only. The saved-drive title includes its destinations, and stop pins on the map open arrival and leaving times.
Earlier Apple capture
The screenshot and row descriptions below describe the Apple layout captured on 21 September 2026. They do not show the Android hour grid or its stop controls. The web grid is described at the end of this page.
At the top
The timeline opens with a headline for the whole drive, set by its worst section — “Weather that could slow you down”, for instance, or “One stretch of hazardous weather”. The wording differs a little between iPhone, Android and the web, but it always describes the worst of the drive.
Under it are the total distance and driving time, such as 288 MI · 4H 10M, and Trip details.
- The strip: every section, coloured by its rating
- Local or elapsed time
- A section: when you reach it, and its rating
- When it was updated, and Refresh
The strip
A bar of every section in order, each in its rating’s colour and carrying its number. Each section’s width is its share of the road, cut exactly where the map’s coloured route changes. The strip stays pinned at the top as you scroll; tap a segment to jump to that section.
A drive that runs over more than one day replaces the strip with one tile per day, each showing that day’s worst rating.
Reading a row
The timeline has four kinds of row, in the order you meet them.
- A weather section. Its number on a band of its rating’s colour, the time you reach it, the place, the temperature, the rating in words and the condition, such as “Light rain”. Tap it to open the section.
- A change of light. Night, Dawn, Daylight or Dusk, with how long it lasts on your drive. The first row of a drive is the light you leave in, captioned Departure. Daylight explains them.
- A change of clock. Where you cross into a time zone, or the clocks change mid-drive: “Clocks go back 1H 0M”, with the two zones, such as CST → MST.
- Arrival. The last row: the destination and the time you get there, on the destination’s clock.
Local or elapsed time
The switch under the strip changes how times are shown. Local time, the default, shows each time on the clock where that section is, with its zone. Elapsed time counts from your departure instead, such as +02:35, and never jumps at a time zone. Local and elapsed time has the detail.
Trip details
Trip details summarises the whole drive:
- DISTANCE
- The length of the route.
- DRIVING
- The driving time, without stops.
- ARRIVAL
- When you get there, on the destination’s clock.
- LOW-LIGHT DRIVING
- Time spent in night, dawn and dusk together.
It also counts the drive’s weather sections.
At the foot
The last lines of the timeline say when the forecast was last updated — with Refresh on iPhone, iPad and Mac — and offer View sources, which names where the forecast, the route and the daylight times come from. Where the weather comes from has the full list.
The web timeline drawn to time
On the web, the timeline uses an hour grid for each local day and scrolls under the overview pinned at its top. The overview lists every section, stop, change of light and clock change in drive order; when they no longer fit, a drive over several days shows a tile per day, which takes you to that day, and a single day scrolls sideways. Block heights follow elapsed time, including stops. A stop is a darker row with its kind, length and place, and when you leave or set off. Light comes from the drive’s light track; a clock change is a dashed line across the grid.
Anything longer than three hours folds around a band. Open it with SHOW. EDIT enables adding stops, dragging to move them and stretching their bottom edge. Keyboard controls and Add a stop provide equivalent actions. UNDO restores each change. While a forecast is being updated, the affected road is marked Updating….
Trip details lists Distance, Driving, Stopped, Arrival, with its date on a drive over several days, and Low-light driving, which excludes stops. Under them it counts the drive’s sections, stops and days. See Long and overnight drives for destinations and pace choices.
The native screenshot above illustrates its captured app. Web blocks, light strip and editing controls have a different arrangement.
